Poste proposé : Communication Officer

# Organization:

Village Health Works (VHW) is a 501(c) (3) global health organization operating in Burundi, East Africa. Founded in 2006, VHW’s mission is to build a healthier and more just, peaceful, and prosperous society by providing quality health care (a prerequisite to productive life) in a dignified environment. We believe quality health care must address the root causes of disease. Accordingly, we offer programs in education, agriculture, and community development in response to urgent community needs.

# Objectives:

The Communications Officer will coordinate all communications for community education through mass campaigns, radio shows, musical performances, video production, and focus group discussions on various health and development issues. He/ She will have also to coordinate all media coverage during events at the VHW site and play a key role in VHW visibility in Burundi. On the other hand, the Communications Officer will gather stories, pictures and videos from community members and programs ‘activities, ensuring that VHW’s activities are shared through social media, regular reports, and success stories. This is a key role in order to ensure VHW visibility within and outside Burundi to support fundraising and advocacy. The communications officer will also align with donor timelines of producing materials

 # Duties and responsibilities:

          A. Radio shows:

  • Produce radio shows bi-monthly on various health and development topics, working with the clinical team and other programs. Manage logistics to ensure they are aired on time at the national radio
  • Organize quiz sessions during community events to motivate community members to listen to radio shows.

    B. Health Education through video production:

  • Produce health education tools to educate and entertain patients in the clinic waiting room in order to make their clinic visit the most beneficial
  • Set the schedule for TV screen content according to the patient consultation schedule (Maternal and new born health, NCD, immunization…)

    C. Other media development

    • Lead development or identification of new communication tools such as posters, leaflets, etc. as well as updating existing tools such as the staff directory.
    • Oversee updates of VHW communication policy, including respect for patient confidentiality, guidelines for visitors, etc. Provide briefing session to journalists visiting campus on these guidelines

      D. Sensitization campaigns:

    • Ensure that administrative procedures are respected before the campaign happens
  • Support clinical team in delivering messages
  • Ensure a great mood of health education and entertainment to retain attendees
  • Gather pictures, videos, and stories from the field during campaigns, respecting journalistic ethics and consent

    E. Patient and Community Stories:

  • Gather and archive written or verbal consents from patients and others beneficiaries
  • Produce patients’ and programs’ intervention success stories and circulate to the necessary stakeholders
  • Take and store pictures related to those stories, developing a filing system for future reference

    F. Develop Social media content:

  • Produce social media post (photos and story)
  • Develop a system for following patient cases over time to tell a complete story

    G. VHW events media coverage:

  • Ensure media coverage of VHW events and produce press releases whenever necessary
  • Make sure that events are aired on time
  • Support VHW programs in producing presentations and/or serving as Master of Ceremonies for events

    H. Knowledge Management

  • Using data generated by M&E, create human interest stories, case studies and lessons with the aim of promoting learning
  • Coordinate periodic internal learning events with emphasis on supporting program draft achievements/lessons
  • Working closely with M&E team to implement the overall KM strategy of the organisation
Profil recherché pour le poste : Communication Officer
  • Bachelors or higher degree in journalism, information science, public health promotion or related field. Masters’ degree preferable
  • Two or more years’ experience in development communications, knowledge management, development journalism in an international NGO, media or similar
  • Proficient with Microsoft office, Adobe, Photoshop or another related software
  • Strong journalistic sense and curiosity Adherence to strictest code of development communication ethics and desire to apply this training in service to others
  • Background in writing development related stories especially in public health (preferred)
  • Ability to produce material in Kirundi, French, and English
  • Must be proactive, able to work independently, and take initiative
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Able to work quickly and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Attention to stress management and self-care
  • Desire to work with and serve vulnerable communities in a rural environment, promoting dignity, compassion, and health
